Event has been cancelled: We’re sorry to announce that our event “The Cave of the Silken Web” has been cancelled and will be rescheduled at a later date. We regret any convenience but hope to see you at our future live-to-projection events. Have a happy Halloween!!
Come out October 29 to Camera Lucida’s annual Halloween live-to-projection event with an original score composed and performed by Jon Silpayamanant!
“The Cave of the Silken Web” (Pán sī dòng | 盤絲洞) is a 1927 Chinese silent film directed by Dan Duyu and starring Yin Mingzhu as the first spider spirit. It is based on an episode of the shenmo fantasy novel “Journey to the West” (西遊記) a Chinese literary classic written in the Ming Dynasty.
The film was considered lost until a copy was discovered in 2011 at the National Library in Mo i Rana, Norway. The first reel and a section of the middle are still lost so this represents three-fourths of the original.
This event is free and is approximately 75 minutes with a short explanatory talk before the film about the history and synopsis of missing segments.
